Secondary Cycle of Studies (S1 - S7)

The transition to the Secondary cycle usually takes place at the age of 11, provided that students have completed the Primary cycle of the European Schools or an equivalent course of study from another recognised educational system.

The duration of studies is seven (7) years and is structured into three distinct sub-cycles, which gradually lead to the acquisition of the European Baccalaureate:

1. Observation Cycle (Classes S1 - S3)

During the first three years, students follow a common curriculum that helps them discover their aptitudes.

  • Languages: Most subjects are taught in the mother tongue (L1) of the section. In class S1, all students are required to start a second foreign language (L3), which they will study at least until S5.

  • Elective Subjects: In class S2, Latin is introduced as an elective subject. In class S3, students who selected them may continue, while the rest can choose the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) course.

  • Bilingual Education & First Foreign Language (L2): In the European Schools, the first foreign language (L2) must be chosen from English, French, or German. A significant change occurs in S3, where Human Sciences (History, Geography) and Ethics are mandatorily taught in L2, promoting true bilingualism among students.

2. Pre-Orientation Cycle (Classes S4 - S5)

At this stage, the curriculum offers greater flexibility and specialisation. Students are required to make their subject choices before the end of S3.

  • Sciences: The integrated Science course is now divided into three distinct two-period subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

  • Mathematics: Students choose their desired level of Mathematics: Standard (4 periods/week) or Advanced (6 periods/week).

  • New Options: Additional courses are offered, such as Economics (taught in L2), a third foreign language (L4), Ancient Greek, etc.

3. Orientation Cycle (Classes S6 - S7)

The final two years of study are dedicated to preparing for the European Baccalaureate. Students finalise their curriculum by submitting their choices before the end of S5.

  • Core Subjects: This mandatory core includes Mother Tongue (L1) and First Foreign Language (L2), Mathematics, at least one Science subject, Philosophy, Physical Education, History, and Geography.

  • Electives & Advanced Courses: Students have access to a wide range of options (two-period or four-period courses). Additionally, advanced-level courses are offered (such as Advanced L1, Advanced L2, or Advanced Mathematics), which provide a significant advantage for university admissions in Europe and worldwide.

Student Assessment and Progress

The monitoring of student progress is continuous and comprehensive, designed to reflect each student's true effort.

  • Progress Reports: These are issued at least two (2) times per school year.

  • Assessment System (A-Marks & B-Marks): There are no official examinations in classes S1-S3. However, from S4 onwards, the grading is divided into:

    • The A-Mark is based on continuous assessment (class participation, assignments, tests).

    • The B-Mark, which is derived from the official written examinations held each semester.

  • The European Baccalaureate: The final Baccalaureate mark (on a scale of 0-100) is calculated through a combination of: the continuous assessment in class S7, the official written examinations (Pre-Bac and Final Exams), and the final oral examinations.

  • Promotion: The requirements for promotion to the next class are strictly determined by the General Rules of the European Schools.
